Elliot

“Your tie is crooked, Elliot,” his mother said with a bite of disapproval, reaching across the compartment to finger the knot of his tie and smooth it beneath his suit jacket’s buttons. He watched her face focus, her eyebrows knit together for a fraction of a second before smiling in satisfaction and sitting back, raising her eyes to his. He smiled uneasily, and she returned it effortlessly as her eyes glided away, clearly not sensing his trepidation. He sat next to his father, who was dressed in the most expensive suit he owned, one that looked like it had been sitting crisply in a closet for years, steamed and impeccable, waiting for the moment Alexei would have his servants dress him in it, staring in the mirror critically.

His brother, young, too young for an event like this, sat next to his mother. He sometimes forgot about Marcus’ six years of existence, so quiet and attached to his mother. He rarely saw her, and so he rarely saw Marcus. He looked like a little prince, pampered, his mother’s hand resting gently on the crown of his skull, his cheek pressed to her breast. Elliot tried to ignore the way his little brother watched him, a mixture of awe and shyness, a stranger who looked frighteningly similar to his father but had spoken no more than three sentences to him in the last year. Elliot didn’t resent Marcus for being the youngest, for being his mother’s favorite, even though she denied it. For being docile and dopey and devoted to his parents in a way Elliot had never been at his age and still struggled to be to this day.

“Marcus, I think Amanda will be there tonight,” Alexei said suddenly, and Elliot glanced at him as the limo roved its way toward the gala. Alexei’s eyes reflected the dim light of the limo compartment, the shadows making the wolf in his chest seem apparent on his face. Marcus lit up and wiggled in his seat. Elliot had no idea who Amanda was.

“Isn’t that exciting,” his mother whispered indulgently, and Marcus beamed up at her, then back at Alexei. Then she looked at Elliot, and apparently, this time she noticed the way he seemed removed from the family, his legs crossed tightly, his hands flat on his lap. His father hated when he fidgeted, ever since he’d been a young boy.

Apparently, that same irritation didn’t exist with Marcus.

“Amanda is Marcus’ little friend from The Playground.” The Playground, not a playground, but an expensive and luxurious daycare. “Her parents are very well-traveled. Lukas owns, what is it, again, dear?”

“Four Ferrari dealerships, Monica.”

“Right,” Elliot’s mother said, tapping the palm of her hand to her forehead. “I always forget.” Elliot nodded, pretending to be impressed. Really, he couldn’t care less about Lukas and his dealerships or his little daughter Amanda, who promised to be just as pretentious as her father probably would be.

“That’s great, the dealerships. I’m sure he’s doing very well for himself,” Elliot said blandly, and his mother nodded.
